Next we have a couple of rounds of Press Conference (or Who Am I), where Brian tries to guess who he is based on the questions the rest of us ask him? HEY, If you turn the volume down (when Brian leaves the room) before we say on-air who we’re making him, you can play too!

so absolutely weird listening to myself but thank you so much for taking my call and my story.
just as a little bit of background, because now that i listen back to what i was saying to you guys, i sound like a horrible daughter hah.
my mom and i have a very straight forward love/hate relationship, therefore my response to her initial phone call is valid and humane :)

but thank you so much! it was an honor to be featured for 5 minutes on the show. i do have to say that i’m a little star struck. i have been listening since day 1 and listened to the radio show for about a year so i’m more attached here but your laughs are contagious and can easily make my stressful full-time school days SO much better :)

you two and your entire crew are incredibly warm-hearted and are so very very kind, thank you :)

Downy Mildew! Wow- very random, a band i would never think in a million years would pop up here. Let me take you back to 1983 San Luis Obispo, I had just moved up here from LA (very reluctantly i must add). I was 19 and needed to get out of the LA scene, and figured SLO would be far enough- and a great place to get serious about college. The first day i was up here I realized there were only a handful of clubs, and I should have no problem avoiding late night scenes and debauchery. One week later I found myself at the Darkroom, which is now an Italian restaurant. Anyways- always a fan of underground music, I saw the crowd was similar to what i left behind in LA- all black clothing, moppy hair, and a thick smog bank of clove cigarettes. Fake ID in hand i waited in line and found myself at a very memorable show. Prime Numbers, Charlie Baldonado, Mark McCreery, (now a famous hollywood special effects artist) fronting this amazing band that really blew away most of what i had seen in LA. Mark was a lot like watching Pete Townsend fronting a band whose sound i really can’t compare to anything. I never became close friends with them, however, in the next few years’ i would run into them at shows and coffee shops. Living in San Luis at this time was amazing, because you could road trip to shows up in SF and LA quite easily. In the Student Union court, there would always be flyers for shows in LA and SF accompanied by flyers offering rides by some 10- 20 kids all of whom knew each other. It was common to run into SLO residents at shows up and down the coast.
I’m not surprised that Charlie has succeeded as a brilliant musician and producer- I have fond memories of him at parties swaying around with a cig dangling- definitely a bit arrogant, but always talented and animated. After college, i ended up touring around with a few bands- (I’m a bassist) had the honor of opening a few shows for Downy Mildew in the very early 90′s. Cheers to them and Cheers to you for having them here!

RE: the texting while walking/driving stuff…

One of our local high schools actually had their students and staff take a “Thumb Pledge” not to text and drive. I may be from a district office, but since I was on campus for another project with some kids, I went ahead and took the pledge as well.

So now when I get tempted to check a text or an email, I always remind myself of how those kids made a pledge not to do so, and I should hold myself to the expectations that I have of them. And that helps. Otherwise (like Brian said) I’ll just pull over.

It was pretty tough at first, but it’s now become a habit. Distracted driving really is dangerous and we need to all role model what it is we expect of our new, young drivers.
